Temporary Resident Permit (TRP)

If you are inadmissible to Canada — for example because of a past offence — but have a compelling reason to enter or stay, a TRP may allow you to do so temporarily.

Who Can Apply

  • You are a foreign national who is inadmissible to Canada or does not meet the requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
  • You do not currently hold temporary resident status.
  • You have a compelling reason to enter or stay in Canada temporarily.
  • Officers weigh your need to be in Canada against any health or safety risks. A TRP is discretionary — there is no guarantee.

Alternatives

Depending on the reason for inadmissibility, criminal rehabilitation or another solution may be more appropriate than a TRP.

Rehabilitation

No Maintained Status

TRP applicants do not keep temporary resident status while a TRP application is processed.

Inadmissible but Need to Be in Canada?

A TRP depends on how well your reasons and risk factors are presented. We prepare a careful, well-evidenced application.
